The English Premier League

It was hardly a surprise but Cristiano Ronaldo has been confirmed as the highest-ranked player in this season’s Actim Index, the official player ratings system of the Barclays Premier League.

The Manchester United star helped fire the Red Devils to a 10th Premier League title at the weekend and has been the shining light in the division this term.

His season’s haul of 838 points from 34 appearances smashed last season’s winner Didier Drogba’s total of 628 points from 36 matches out of sight.

Averaging 25 points per game, the Portuguese ace ended the campaign 108 points clear of closest rival Emmanuel Adebayor, who would also have ended top of last season’s Index with 730.
It was a phenomenal effort from Sir Alex Ferguson’s most-prized asset.

He had a monstrous 108 shots on target – 39 more than closest rival Wayne Rooney – netting 31 goals in the top flight.

Adebayor finished the campaign with an impressive 730 points – averaging 20 points per game.
His achievement shouldn’t be overlooked, however, after many doubted he could become the club’s talisman following Thierry Henry’s departure.

The Togo international ended the campaign with just four points fewer than Henry achieved when topping the Actim Index in 2005/06.

Fernando Torres celebrated his first season in English football by claiming third place.
The Spaniard took his place in the Actim team of the season after finishing as the second-highest ranked striker.

Torres earned 682 points in his maiden season but was definitely more at home at Anfield, where he collected 518 of those.

Captain Steven Gerrard joined Torres in the team of the season, ending in ninth place overall with 568 points, while another Reds star Jose Reina (21st overall) was named as Actim’s top-ranked goalkeeper this season.

Cesc Fabregas ended the campaign in eighth overall, also earning himself a place in the Actim team of the season, along with team-mate Gael Clichy.

The backbone of the team of the week included two defenders who were at the heart of United’s success, with Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown joining Ronaldo in the starting XI.

Everton’s Joleon Lescott, whose form this season saw him called up by England, was also there along with Aston Villa skipper Gareth Barry, who finished in seventh overall, two places behind Villa youngster Ashley Young, who narrowly missed out on a team of the season slot.
